Red Cliff
Red Cliff is one of the two films in 2008 which tell the story of Three Kingdom. The film – which is thought of as the most expensive movie ever made in Asia – costs $80 million and atracts many star actors and actresses to join. The film is directed by John Woo, who himself known as blockbuster movie maker, and released in two series. The first is released in July 2008 and the other in January 2009. The theme of the movie is the Battle of The Red Cliff which occured in the Han dynasty.
The story begins with Cao Cao (Zhang Fengyi) asking the emperor to expand his territory to the south in the direction of the Wu. On the other hand, Liu Bei (You Yong) and his followers are retreating from Xinye with thousands of refugees after being attacked by Cao Cao’s men. Cao Cao is determined to terminate Liu Bei and conquer his territory. But with the help of his loyal subordinates: Zhuge Liang (Takeshi Kaneshiro), Zhao Yun (Hu Jun), Guan Yu (Ba Sen Zha Bu), and Zhang Fei (Zang Jinsheng), Liu Bei and the refugees managed to escape. Zhuge Liang then propose to Liu Bei to form a coalition with Sun Quan (Chang Chen) to fight Cao Cao. Zhuge Liang succed in persuading Sun Quan and Zhou Yu (Tony Leung Chiuwai) to join the war. Thus the great battle begins.
I have just watched the movie yesterday and really can’t wait to watch the continuation. Before the end of the movie it was revealed that Cao Cao started the whole war because of love. His love for Zhou Yu’s wife has caused many lives to be lost. It is sometime really amazing how love can drive a man mad and him do anything beyond our wildest dream.
